Learning how to unclog tough drains is a great way to save money. Most sink and tub drains are caused by serious hair and soap build-up. If you clean your drain really well, you should have no need to call a plumber or clean the drain for another two years.

How to Unclog a Sink by Removing and Cleaning the Stopper

Look under the sink on the very backside and locate the pivot rod, a piece of metal that sticks out of the drainpipe and controls the movement of your stopper. Attached to that is a metal bar called a clevis, and a spring clip that keeps the clevis from sliding off the pivot rod.
Remove the spring clip. Located at the top of the clevis is a retaining screw that holds it to the stopper rod. Loosen the screw to remove the clevis from the stopper rod, then pull out the stopper rod.
Use pliers to loosen and remove the pivot rod retaining nut on the back of the drainpipe. Pull the pivot rod out of the drainpipe and remove the stopper from the sink. Clean the stopper thoroughly with a toothbrush.
